It’s not that I don’t want to. I just need inspiration sometimes. I am not someone who can force myself to just write – and just write about anything. Something has to move me. Just yesterday I was telling myself I really needed to write something but was at a loss as to what… until I decided to do some leisurely reading.

I admit, I’m not a big leisure reader. I think that’s because, as an English minor in college, I did A LOT of reading. A LOT. I think it kind of ruined it for me. I go in waves of reading phases and when I do read, I like autobiographies and non-fiction. Although, I did really love “The DaVinci Code.”

I just whizzed through books by Arianna Huffington, Gene Simmons, Patti Stanger (yes, the Millionaire Matchmaker – don’t laugh) and my latest is “Break Out!” by Joel Osteen… quite the diverse collection, eh?

Now, I want to preface this by saying I’m by no means a follower of Joel Olsteen or a believer of his ministry. So I’m certainly not endorsing him. What I will say is, sometimes on Sundays I have him on the TV while eating breakfast. It’s usually unintentional and just a matter of being too lazy to change the channel. Most of the time I’m only half paying attention.

And, I will say that I do find his stories and things he has to say easy to follow, understand and even sometimes relate to, as compared to other televangelists that I just don’t follow or understand. I like his storytelling and every now and then something he says captures my attention, and at the very least, provides some interesting food for thought.

I’ve heard a lot about this book and just decided I wanted to check it out and see what he had to say.

While reading it last night, I came across a statement from him that I really connected with. It said:

“God promises that if you’ll open your mouth wide, then He will fill it. But it all starts with your capacity to receive. You can’t go around thinking thoughts of mediocrity and expect to excel. You can’t think thoughts of lack and expect to have abundance. The two don’t go together….”

I connected with it because it relates to advice I give when I speak. Those who have been in my audiences and those who know me know that I’m really big on having the right kind of attitude. And that I believe attitude is the one thing that can keep you from achieving your goals, from being successful and from being happy.

If you live life thinking that you can’t do something or will never be able to do something, that you don’t matter and that no one cares, that you can’t ever be successful and have the good life… you’re just setting yourself up for a life of unhappiness and failure. Living with a negative mindset won’t get you anywhere or anything. I’m sorry, but it just won’t. Period.

So when Joel says, “….You can’t go around thinking thoughts of mediocrity and expect to excel….” he is absolutely right. That mediocrity includes a negative attitude and negative mindset. Exceling is achieving your goals, being successful and being happy.

To open your mouth wide and have a capacity to receive, you have to put away that negative attitude and mindset. Stop thinking that you can’t do something or will never be able to do something, that you don’t matter and that no one cares, that you can’t ever be successful and have the good life. Stop it right now. There’s no room for good things to happen in your life with all of this negativity taking up space in your mind.

Once you say goodbye to a negative attitude and mindset, you’ll be so much open for goodness. Start thinking that you CAN do something. Start believing that you DO matter and that not just someone CARES, but many people do. Start thinking about that goal you want to be successful with and believe that you WILL achieve it. Start believing, knowing and eventually seeing that you CAN and DESERVE to live the good life.

Say goodbye to negative thoughts and mindsets, and say hello to positivity, optimism, happiness and the good life. I promise you that you will find life so much better once you open your mouth wide and have a capacity to receive, you will abundantly excel in life. And this is something that anyone – religious or not – can engage in, believe in and receive in.

Until next time, fashionably yours,

Jen

Hello everyone!
